ABOUT
Viatrix is the pseudonym of Beatriz Leonel Borges. Derived from Latin, the name means "traveler" or "one who walks paths," evoking ideas of journey, displacement, and search. A 27-year-old multidisciplinary artist from São Paulo, Brazil, she holds a degree in Visual Arts from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), where she developed her research across different media and languages. Her practice moves between painting and ceramics, investigating the materialization of the invisible, dreams, archetypal patterns, and subjective layers of experience, as a territory of creation and self-knowledge.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Viatrix's artistic practice investigates the materialization of the invisible, that which belongs to the realm of the unconscious, whether archetypal patterns, dreams, or other subjective layers of experience, as a territory of creation and self-knowledge. Her process begins with observation, both of what is internal and of the symbols that permeate everyday life and the outside world, in a feedback loop: looking outward inspires symbolic images, just as inner experiences reshape that gaze. From this interplay emerges the spontaneity that drives her creation, always guided by these patterns, drawn out through color, mark-making, and the symbols built within the painting, her primary tool of investigation.
From there, visual narratives emerge, composed of fragments that reorganize themselves like mental collages, structuring her pictorial thinking through cutting, layering, and displacement, even though she does not always use collage as a material technique. By blending symbols and abstraction, she constructs images that move between the intimate and the collective, converting memories, dreams, and inner landscapes into compositions that render these subjective layers perceptible.
Moving between painting and ceramics, she expands her investigation, allowing each medium to translate specific aspects of this symbolic universe. Her process moves from fragmentation toward visual syntheses, transforming intimate experiences into points of collective identification.
