ABOUT
Viatrix is the pseudonym of Beatriz Leonel Borges. Derived from Latin, the name means “traveler” or “ who walks paths”. A 27-year-old multidisciplinary artist from São Paulo, Brazil, she holds a degree in Visual Arts from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), where she developed her research across different media and languages. Her practice moves between painting, ceramics, and expanded visual processes, such as digital collage, reflecting an ongoing investigation into materiality, image, and symbolic construction in contemporary art.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Viatrix’s artistic practice explores dreams and the unconscious as spaces for creation and self-understanding. Based on written records of her dreams, she reflects on her personal experiences in order to recognize recurring symbols in her life. From this process, visual narratives emerge through fragments that come together like mental collages. Although she does not always use collage as a physical technique, her way of thinking in painting is shaped by cutting, layering, and shifting images. By combining symbols and abstraction, she creates works that move between the personal and the collective, transforming dreams, memories, and inner landscapes into images that make inner experiences visible. She understands that the unconscious often works in a spontaneous and intuitive way.
Working with painting and ceramics, she expands this research into different materials, allowing each medium to express specific aspects of her symbolic universe. Her process begins with fragments and gradually develops into visual compositions that connect invisible elements such as ideas, mental images, and symbols with physical matter. In this way, personal experiences become shared spaces of recognition. Her practice is a continuous process of exploring symbols, where material and image act as extensions of the unconscious, giving form to what cannot normally be seen.
